De Nieuport à Bugatti

A wealthy and eclectic sportsman, Doctor Gabriel Espanet quickly preferred to compete in motorcycle races rather than practice his profession as a surgeon. At the same time, he discovered aviation in its infancy. Encouraged by Edouard Nieuport, he learned to fly and quickly became an instructor. He successfully took part in various international races, including the Schneider seaplane trophies. The discovery of Rembrandt Bugatti's sculptures leads him to meet Ettore with whom he will befriend after introducing him to his friend Roland Garros.

This friendship with Ettore Bugatti led him to leave the front in 1917 to take over the management of the "Bugatti Mission" which was to participate, in the United States, in the adaptation to industrial production of the U-shaped engine which was to equip a fleet of LUSAC bombing planes. He will then participate in the flight tests of the aircraft. The Armistice will freeze the great development of the project.

Back in Europe, he launched into the luxury car business, including Bugattis. Faithful in friendship, he remained in physical and letter-writing contact with Ettore Bugatti until the latter's death in 1947.

Sportsman fortuné et éclectique, le Docteur Gabriel Espanet a rapidement préféré disputer des courses motocyclistes plutôt que de pratiquer son métier de chirurgien. Il découvre, en même temps, l'aviation alors balbutiante.

Encouragé par Edouard Nieuport, il apprend à piloter et devient rapidement instructeur. Il prend part, avec succès, à diverses courses internationales, dont les trophées Schneider en hydravion. La découverte des sculptures de Rembrandt Bugatti l'amène à faire la connaissance d'Ettore avec qui il va se lier d'amitié après lui avoir présenté son ami Roland Garros.

Cette amitié avec Ettore Bugatti le pousse à quitter le front en 1917 pour prendre la direction de la "Mission Bugatti" qui va participer, aux Etats-Unis, à l'adaptation à une production industrielle du moteur en U qui doit équiper une flotte d'avions LUSAC de bombardement. Il participera ensuite aux essais en vol de l'avion. L'Armistice gèlera le grand développement du projet.

De retour en Europe, il se lancera dans le commerce de voitures de luxe, dont les Bugatti. Fidèle en amitié, il restera en contact physique et épistolaire avec Ettore Bugatti jusqu'à la mort de ce dernier en 1947.
